The BLUE MOUNTAINS GRAN FONDO June 14 & 16 2018
Calling all cycling aficionados! One of the things that draws people to Grey County is the gorgeous scenery which provides an ideal setting for, among other things, cycling. Cyclists can often be seen flying along rural routes and working incredibly hard to scale mountainous backroads as they hone their skills and abilities by training in our beautiful region. If you’ve ever admired these intrepid souls, make sure to take in The Blue Mountains Gran Fondo Time Trials and the Road Race, held Thursday, June 14th and Saturday June 16th respectively. Don’t miss this opportunity to watch or even participate in the sole Canadian qualifier events for the 2018 UCI Gran Fondo World Series as it is held in our own backyard in gorgeous Grey County! The UCI World Cycling Tour, now the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, is entering its eighth season! Amateur and master cyclists now have the chance to compete for the coveted rainbow jersey in qualifier events all over the world to win their ticket for the World Championships in Varese Italy, from August 30th to September 7th 2018.
TIME TRIALS kick-off to what’s sure to be an amazing weekend of racing on Thursday June 14th.
The Time Trial event will be held in Thornbury and will consists of 16 separate categories of riders, classified by age according to UCI rules. Start times (expected to be late afternoon) will be posted 48 hours prior to the event.

The ROAD RACE is currently the only Canadian stop for the UGFWS qualifier events. Consisting of 16 separate categories of riders competing in 8 distinct races, riders are classified into categories as determined by age according to UCI rules (see World Championship Qualification Criteria). True to the UCI Gran Fondo spirit, the purpose of this event is “to enable amateur cyclists to battle for a World Champion title at events with the finest organization in the world”. All riders will be required to carry UCI licenses or race day road permits (available at registration), in adherence with the UCI’s aim to contribute to the international promotion of “Cycling for All”.

New this year is the MEDIO FONDO, a 75km race (for those who feel they aren’t ready for the full distance or just prefer a slightly easier pace) taking place on the same day as the Road Races, June 16th. To keep things fun and challenging the Medio Fondo will have a timed KOM competition up the “Epping” climb, a well known segment in the area that is approximately half way through the course.
