We’re approaching the end of June, exams are underway at Grey Highlands Secondary School and the kids at MacPhail Memorial and Beavercrest are counting down the days until the official start of summer vacation! In our house that means that very soon, report cards, soccer games, long weekends and even average summer days will be celebrated in a very particular way…with ICE CREAM!!! Living minutes from the home of Chapman’s Ice Cream (Markdale, Ontario) means that those of us in and around Grey Highlands have a variety of options when the urge for an icy treat strikes. Here are a few of my own suggestions for places you can visit the next time you find yourself craving a cone to celebrate summer.
Jolley’s Dairy Bar & Video – 23 Collingwood Street, Flesherton (Grey Rd 4 just east of Flesherton)
Rob and his friendly staff of local kids offer a good variety of flavours, reasonable prices and super-sized cones making this place a long-standing local favourite. Friendly warning: the single scoop weighs in at half a pound and the DOUBLE SCOOP is ONE WHOLE POUND of ice cream! Open daily until 9pm through the summer. Take-out only, some outdoor seating provided. Find them on facebook: @jolleysdairybarnadvideo
The Bakery – 6 Sydenham Street, Flesherton (at the lights at Hwy 4 & 10 in Flesherton)
Widely known for their wonderful baked goods, The Bakery recently started serving Mapleton’s organic soft-serve frozen yogurt and it’s fast becoming a favourite with the regulars! Open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays until 5pm, Fridays until 6pm. Eat-in or take-out. Find them on facebook: @the.bakery.in.flesherton
Fire and Ice – 19 Toronto Street North, Markdale (in the old Firehouse on Hwy 10)
Stop in for dinner or drop in for a treat. With a wide variety of frozen treats to choose from (everything from cones to frappes to the F&I’s version of a blizzard) you might need a few minutes to make up your mind! Open until 9pm on weekdays and 11pm on weekends. Eat-in and take-out available. For booking info visit www.fireandice.ca
The Parlour – 177 Toronto Street North, Markdale (in the LCBO parking lot at the north end of town)
Conveniently located right on Highway 10, The Parlour is quickly gaining a following thanks to their extremely generous serving sized and wide variety of flavours. Cones, homemade waffle cones, milkshakes, and sundaes are available until 9pm, weather permitting. Take-out only, some outdoor seating provided. Find them on facebook: @theparlour177
Top O’ The Rock – 194424 Grey Road 13, Eugenia (east of Flesherton and north on 13)
Cottagers and locals lucky enough to live close to the lake make Top O’ The Rock their go-to spot for everything from take-out pizza to cleaning supplies. Summer favourites include jumbo cones and Slush Puppies. Open 7 days a week until 9pm. Take-out only. For full details visit www.topotherock.com
