General stores are an important part of our history here in Grey County. These stores often began as a room located within the merchant’s house, but they weren’t just places to buy goods. They were where people gathered to exchange stories, share news, and build connections. Sometimes called mercantiles, emporiums or even general dealers, these stores were especially crucial in rural centers like Grey County. They played – and continue to play – a key role in fostering our sense of community.
